Ludwik Łazarz Zamenhof, originally Eliezer Lewi Samenhof, was a Polish ophthalmologist of Jewish descent, the initiator of the universal language esperanto, eight-time nominee for the Peace Nobel Prize. He believed that the main cause of misunderstandings and disputes among people is the language barrier. A single, common language was meant to solve these problems. Esperanto is a language of hope created in the desire to unite people.
